This sediment was buried and compressed beneath further layers of sediment and later folded, uplifted and eroded to form the present land surface.<\/p>\n<p>The caves contain various formations such as stalactites, stalagmites, cave weta and are an ideal environment for glow-worms to live in.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_825\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Inside-Clifden-Caves.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-825\" class=\"wp-image-825 size-medium\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Inside-Clifden-Caves-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Inside Clifden Caves\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.onnaturesedge.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Inside-Clifden-Caves-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.onnaturesedge.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Inside-Clifden-Caves.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-825\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Inside Clifden Caves<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Ensure you have two good torches per person with spare batteries and warm clothing.  Ask for advice at the nearest <a title=\"Tuatapere Information Centre\" href=\"\/tuatapere\/for-visitors\/information-centre\/\">Information Centre<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It will take approximately 1\u00bd to 2 hours to travel through the entire cave system and return to the car park along the road.<\/p>\n<p>A high level of fitness and agility is required to navigate the cave system.  Some passages are narrow and will require crawling on hands and knees.  Follow the orange triangular makers which indicate the route through the cave system.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Warning:<\/span><\/strong> This <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">cave system is subject to flash flooding<\/span>.  Do NOT enter during or immediately after heavy rain, or if rain events are forecast.  To fully explore these caves, caving experience is essential.<\/p>\n<h5>Access:<\/h5>\n<p>1 kilometre north-east of the Clifden-Blackmount corner (State Highway 96).  Signposted along the Clifden Gorge Road.
