Leaving Lake Hauroko, the Wairaurahiri River is the steepest river in New Zealand to be navigated by commercial <a title=\"Jet Boat\" href=\"\/tuatapere\/for-visitors\/things-to-do\/#jet-boats\">jet boat<\/a> operators.<\/p>\n<p>The lake also provides access to the Dusky Track.<\/p>\n<h5>Thicket Burn Campsite:<\/h5>\n<p><em>(basic facilities)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This campsite is located at the entrance to Fiordland National Park on the way to Lake Hauroko.<\/p>\n<h5><a id=\"lake-hauroko-bush-walk\"><\/a>Lake Hauroko Bush Walk:<\/h5>\n<p><em>(40 minutes return)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>From the car park at Lake Hauroko, an easy loop walk skirts a swampy area close to the lake. &nbsp;The trees change from mainly matai, totara and rimu in the wetter area, to mountain beech in the drier areas.<\/p>\n<h5><a id=\"lake-hauroko-lookout\"><\/a>Lake Hauroko Lookout:<\/h5>\n<p><em>(4 hours return)<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_481\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Lake-Hauroko-Lookout.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-481\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-481\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Lake-Hauroko-Lookout-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Lake Hauroko Lookout\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.onnaturesedge.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Lake-Hauroko-Lookout-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.onnaturesedge.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Lake-Hauroko-Lookout.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-481\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lake Hauroko Lookout<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The track near the jetty follows along the lake edge, before climbing steeply to the lookout.  On a clear day there are stunning views of Lake Hauroko, Foveaux Strait to the south, the Takitimu Mountains to the east and the Princess and Kaherekoau Maintains in the northwest. &nbsp;This track is steep and rough, but well worth the effort.<\/p>\n<h5><a id=\"big-totara-walk\"><\/a>Big Totara Walk:<\/h5>\n<p><em>(30 minutes return)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On the Lillburn Monowai Road in Dean Forest, is signposted from the Lillburn Valley Road (the road to Lake Hauroko). &nbsp;Along this pleasant short walk you will see some of the largest totara trees in Southland, which are over 1,000 years old.
