McCracken’s Rest<\/h4>\n

One of the most renowned scenic rest areas\/lookouts on the Southern Scenic Route<\/a>. McCracken’s Rest offers travellers an opportunity to rest and sample the fresh, clean air of Te Waewae Bay<\/a>. The area was named after the landowners, Robert and David McCracken.<\/p>\n

The area includes parking space, a viewing platform, and picnic tables.<\/p>\n

The platform offers views of Sand Hill Point, the Hump Ridge, Solander Island (one million years old, formed by the eroded skeleton of a volcano), Pahia Point and Stewart Island. In good weather the area is favoured by recreational fishers and gemstones can be found along the beach.<\/p>\n

Look carefully out over Te Waewae Bay<\/a> and you may catch glimpses of New Zealand’s largest pod of Hector’s dolphins (pokohue).<\/p>\n
