It is a living Memorial to their memory and it has been continually used since it was opened.<\/p>\n<h5>The First Committee<\/h5>\n<p>Elected on November 8th 1926, the first committee consisted of Messrs McLeod (Chairman), Rillstone (Secretary), Waddell, Stuck, Hamilton, Harper, Smith and Nicholas together with Mesdames Duncan, TJ Henderson, Rillstone, A Prentice, T Ward, Benneworth, McCulloch and Laurie.<\/p>\n<h5>Subscriptions<\/h5>\n<div id=\"attachment_1950\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.onnaturesedge.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/NZShilling.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1950\" src=\"https:\/\/www.onnaturesedge.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/NZShilling-300x149.png\" alt=\"New Zealand Shilling\" width=\"300\" height=\"149\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1950\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.onnaturesedge.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/NZShilling-300x149.png 300w, https:\/\/www.onnaturesedge.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/NZShilling.png 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1950\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">1933 New Zealand Shilling<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Subscriptions were ten shillings a year for one book, with an addition of six shillings a year for each extra book.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In 1956 our current Chairman Mrs N Dixon joined the library and has been our Chairman since 1969.<\/li>\n<li>In 1970 &#8216;Shop Days&#8217; began as a means to raise money for buying books.<\/li>\n<li>In 1983 the Lions Club donated and laid carpets.<\/li>\n<li>In 1991 the library changed from a subscription library to being rate funded (all ratepayers in the Ward contribute to the library).<\/li>\n<li>In 1993 the Waiau Memorial Library Charitable Trust was formed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>Building Extension<\/h5>\n<p>After we outgrew the original building, the library was extended and officially opened on the 7th October, 1999.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_580\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Waiau-Memorial-Library.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-580\" src=\"https:\/\/www.onnaturesedge.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Waiau-Memorial-Library.jpg\" alt=\"Waiau Memorial Library\" width=\"1024\"><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-580\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Waiau Memorial Library<\/p><\/div>\n<h5>Book Exchange<\/h5>\n<p>An exchange of books with Winton occurs 4 times a year, which enables us to have a continued variety of new titles. This helps supplement the grant we are given to buy our own bookstock.<\/p>\n<p>Our staff are voluntary and cover the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.onnaturesedge.co.nz\/tuatapere\/community\/waiau-memorial-library\/\">three sessions held on Fridays<\/a>. Because he drove a wagon, he was able to carry extra gear an infantryman would find difficult.<\/p>\n<p>After <a href=\"https:\/\/nzhistory.govt.nz\/war\/armistice-day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Armistice Day<\/a>, conditions were hard for the German people.
